Check, Call, Care
Emergency Scene Management (ESM) involves all aspects of the rescue. ESM is the control over, and organization of, the rescue environment. This can be described as
Check: Check the Scene, the Person and the Person’s ABCs
Call: Call EMS/9-1-1 and get an AED
Care: Care for all life-threating conditions and monitor the quality of vital signs.
Check
- Check the Scene: Check the scene to ensure it is safe
- Check the Person: Check the casualty for responsiveness. If unconscious, call EMS/9-1-1.
- Check the Person’s ABCs:
A = Airway: Open the airway using a head-tilt, chin-lift.
B = Breathing: Look, listen and feel for 10 seconds.
C = Circulation: Circulation is good if casualty is breathing. Compressions are required if casualty is not breathing.
Call
- If the medical assistance is required, Call EMS (Emergency Medical Services) / 9-1-1. If the person is unconscious, tell them to bring AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
Care:
- Care for all life-threatening conditions first
- Deal with Shock: If required, deal with Shock using WARTS (Warmth, Airway, Rest and Reassurance, Treatment of minor injuries, Semi-prone, Semi-sit, Shock position).
- Determine major injury or illness by performing a rapid body survey.
- Perform a Secondary survey.
